Email News Service October 09: FDIC’s Bair takes own line on too-big-to-fail

WASHINGTON, October 29 (Global Risk Regulator) - A top U.S. bank regulator said today a US government mechanism to dismantle troubled giant financial companies should be pre-funded, a departure from the administration’s draft legislation on the subject, Reuters news agency reported.

Sheila Bair, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC), said that Congress should establish a Financial Company Resolution Fund (FCRF) that is pre-funded by assessments on financial companies with assets of at least $10 billion. As FDIC chairman, Bair heads the federal agency that insures customer deposits at America’s banks.
